I, personally, will not be making New Year’s Resolutions this year.
Not that I am against New Year’s Resolutions. I get it. Out with the old, in with the new. We’re inspired by the idea of shedding the previous year and starting afresh. What better time to start new changes, start a new life, find a new you, shed a few pounds, etc than the beginning of a year? My answer is any time is that time.
We often start our changes at the beginning of something, be it a new year, the first of the month, the beginning of a week, after our birthdays. This signals a new beginning and starting on a certain day appeals to our psyche. However determination and focus is the reason we make those changes. If you’re determined to make those changes then you can start at any time on any day.
If you have to schedule the day your start your change(s) then go ahead. Do whatever it is that will help you succeed. Ten years ago when I quit smoking I scheduled it. I knew to stop smoking before a Halloween party would only be setting myself up for failure so I decided to quit the Monday after the party. The schedule gave me permission to smoke during the stress of gearing up for the party, for while I was drinking and partying, and for the stress of clean up. But Monday when that was over I would have no more excuses. So I quit smoking and I did it on a schedule.
So if need to schedule your change around something then go right ahead. Yet always remember a resolution or changes need determination, resolve, and focus. You can make those changes anytime as long as you have that.
Unlike Calvin I do not believe I am perfect the way I am. I am a work in progress. I always will be. If ever I believe I am perfect then I’ve regressed not progressed to be an enlightened, well rounded, and joyful person.
Admitting I am not perfect does not mean I do not like who I am. I do. Admitting you have flaws and always working on them isn’t a sign of weakness but a sign of wisdom and growth. To grow as a person we have to constantly work on ourselves.
I am and always will be working on improving myself. I’m already on a path of self-discovery, changes, and making a better me. I will do this through education and compassion. This blog is a catalyst for many of my changes. It is the format for which I am holding myself accountable. Hopefully it will continue to be so.
Find your joy and laissez les bons temps rouler!
